Avast! Free Antivirus เป็นโปรแกรมแอนตี้ไวรัสที่อนุญาตให้ใช้งานแบบส่วนตัวได้ฟรี แต่ต้องลงทะเบียนหลังใช้งานครบ 60 วัน เพื่อต่ออายุการใช้งาน (ลงทะเบียนฟรี) จุดเด่นของ Avast! Free Antivirus คือมี Antivirus Kernel ประสิทธิภาพสูงสามารถสแกนไวรัสในขณะทำการบูทเครื่องคอมพิงเตอร์ (Boot-time) ได้ และมีประสิทธิภาพในการป้องกันแบบฝังตัว (Resident Protection) สูง ทำงานได้ดีทั้งแบบ On-demand และ/หรือ Resident virus scanner รูปด้านล่างเป็นผลการทดสอบ On-Demand Scanning Speed Test ในเดือนกุมภาพันธ์ 2554 ซึ่ง Avast! ทำความเร็วได้สูงสุดที่ 16.3 MB/sec (สามารถดาวน์โหลดรายงานในรูปแบบ PDF ได้ที่ Anti-Virus Comparative report)


นอกจากนี้ Avast! Free Antivirus ยังรองรับการเปลี่ยนหน้ากาก (Skinable) ได้ตามความต้องการอีกด้วย และนอกจากสามารถในการป้องกันมัลแวร์ประเภทต่างๆ ที่แพร่ระบาดในปัจจุบัน ตัวอย่างเช่น Virus, Spyware, Trojan เป็นต้น แล้วยังสามารถป้องกัน Rootkit รวมถึงป้องกันการโจมตีระบบด้วยสคริปต์ (Script) ได้อีกด้วย
